The most prominent advantage of polyamide fiber is its superior wear resistance compared to other fibers, followed by its good elasticity, with an elastic recovery rate comparable to wool. It is also lightweight, with a specific gravity of 1.14. Among commercialized synthetic fibers, it is second only to polypropylene (polypropylene, with a specific gravity of less than 1), and lighter than polyester fiber (with a specific gravity of 1.38). Therefore, polyamide fiber can be processed into fine, uniform, soft, and smooth silk for weaving into beautiful and durable fabrics. In addition, like polyester fiber, it has the advantages of corrosion resistance, insect resistance, and mold resistance.
The disadvantage of polyamide fibers is that their resistance to rotation is slightly poor. If exposed to sunlight for a long time outdoors, they are prone to yellowing and their strength decreases. Compared with polyester fibers, they have poor shape retention, resulting in less straight fabrics. Additionally, their fiber surfaces are smooth and have a waxy texture. In recent years, various improvement measures have been developed to address these shortcomings, such as adding light resistant agents to improve their resistance to rotation, or creating irregular cross-sections to improve appearance and gloss. DTY or ATY processing, blending or interweaving with other fibers, has been used to improve hand feel.
