Plastic recycling refers to the process of converting waste plastics into reusable forms. Waste plastic can be rigid materials like bottles or containers; it can also be non-rigid materials like film or wrapping paper. The plastic recycling market can be subdivided into resins, such as PET. Polyethylene terephthalate is abbreviated as PET. It is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin in the polyester series. It is used to make clothing fibers, containers for liquids and food, and most of them are made by thermoforming.

According to the report of Transparency Market Research, recycled PET is mainly used to make polyester fiber, bundling packaging tape and non-food container. Most thermoplastics can be recycled; because a large number of carbonated beverage bottles and drinking water bottles are made of PET, the recycling of PET bottles is more extensive than other plastics. The recycling of thermoplastics mainly undergoes two processes. The first process includes recycling it to the original raw material link, in which the structure of the polymer is completely destroyed; while in the other recycling process, the original characteristics of the polymer can be maintained.

The recycling of thermoplastics is a sustainable measure. A large amount of plastic waste makes the environment worse, so cleaning up and sorting waste is an extremely important measure. In the industry of recycling thermoplastics, bottle recycling is the most important part. Various liquid packaging bottles, such as bottles for water, juice, beer, sauces, detergents, daily chemicals and carbonated beverages, can be recycled. Because the density of the bottle material is different from the shape of the bottle itself, the bottle can be easily distinguished and can be separated from the waste plastic stream by automatic or manual sorting.

The established polyester recycling industry consists of three main parts: waste recycling: PET bottle collection and waste separation; flake production: production of clean PET bottle flakes; flake processing: converting small thin fragments into final products . The first step still contains bottles with PET waste content exceeding 90%. In the second step, the collected bottles are transformed into clean bottle flakes. The complexity of this step depends on the quality of the flakes ultimately required. In the last step, these cute little bottle flakes will be processed into films, bottles, fibers, filaments and other various products.

Recycled polyester staple fiber (RPSF) has emerged as a new force in recycling PET materials. It is predicted that RPSF will become the future fiber that will build the entire textile industry. It is made by melting a thermoplastic PET bottle and then pressing the thick material into filaments. The filament can be made into a lengthy thread and can be cut into a certain length of fiber spinning. The woven fabric is transformed into clothing such as sweaters, jackets or sweatshirts. The recycled yarn or weaving can be used alone or together with other fibers to make durable rough products, such as jackets, coats, shoes, bags, hats or other accessories.

Demand from the lightweight automobile and packaging industries is expected to drive the market during the forecast period. On the other hand, factors such as strict government regulations and environmental issues will also limit market growth. Polypropylene producers are shifting their focus from synthetic to bio-based, which has also led to an increase in the demand for bio-based polypropylene.

According to regional division, the global market is divided into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, and Latin America. Among these regions, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to dominate the global market throughout the forecast period. The Asia-Pacific region is trying to convert plastics into recyclable resins for further applications, and cheap labor and loose government policies keep the region at the forefront. The use of plastics in Europe has strict legal regulations, and Europe is also expected to show steady growth in the global market. Because Europe prohibits dumping plastic in landfills, European regions recycle plastic waste every year. Increasing environmental awareness is expected to promote the development of the European plastic recycling market.
