1. Sensory identification
Observe the appearance:
Color: Polyester staple fibers are usually white, and there are also dyed colored fibers. The color is uniform and there are no obvious impurities.
Gloss: It has a certain luster, similar to the luster of silk, but slightly darker than silk.
Morphology: The fibers are short fibers, generally between 38 and 102 mm in length, and uniform in thickness.
Touch:
Feel firm: Compared with natural fibers such as cotton and linen, polyester staple fibers feel stiffer and are not easy to deform.
Smooth feeling: It feels smooth when touched, unlike fibers such as wool that have a soft touch.
2. Combustion identification
Prepare tools: lighter or alcohol lamp, tweezers.
Combustion process: Use tweezers to grab a small amount of polyester staple fibers and bring them close to the fire source.
Observe the combustion phenomenon:
Combustion speed: When polyester staple fibers burn, the flame is yellow and the burning speed is fast.
Smell: When burning, a special aromatic smell is produced, similar to the smell of burning candles.
Residue: After burning, black hard lumps of residue will be left, which are not easy to crush by hand.
3. Chemical reagent identification
Prepare reagents: 37% hydrochloric acid solution, 20% sodium hydroxide solution.
Identification process: Take a small amount of polyester staple fiber and put it into hydrochloric acid solution and sodium hydroxide solution respectively.
Observe the reaction:
Acid resistance: Polyester staple fiber basically does not change in hydrochloric acid solution and has good acid resistance.
Alkali resistance: In sodium hydroxide solution, polyester staple fiber is also relatively stable, but it will undergo a certain degree of hydrolysis in high temperature and high concentration alkali solution.
4. Microscope identification
Prepare tools: microscope.
Observe fiber morphology: Put polyester staple fiber under a microscope for observation.
Morphological characteristics: The longitudinal morphology of polyester staple fiber is smooth, straight cylindrical, and the cross section is circular or approximately circular.
Through the comprehensive application of the above methods, polyester staple fiber can be identified more accurately. It should be noted that when making identification, multiple methods should be combined to make judgments to improve the accuracy of identification. At the same time, for some specially treated or modified polyester staple fibers, more professional detection methods may be required.
