On October 8th local time, US President Trump stated that the US and Iran were engaged in productive consultations and that the US would not attack Iran before the November 3rd midterm elections. However, just the day before, several US officials stated that the Pentagon had instructed the US Central Command to complete preparations to deal with a possible resumption of large-scale military action against Iran.
Analysts point out that the possibility of a full-scale resumption of military action against Iran cannot be completely ruled out, especially after the US midterm elections, this probability may increase significantly. Structural obstacles exist in negotiations between the two sides on core issues, making substantial progress difficult. The future direction of the US-Iran situation remains uncertain.
Trump Says No Attack on Iran Before Midterm Elections
US Imposes New Round of Sanctions on Iran
US President Trump posted on social media on the 8th that the US and Iran were engaged in "productive" consultations and that the US would not launch an attack on Iran before the midterm elections.
In a post, Trump stated that despite Iran's "very bad" economic and military situation, and despite the continued US blockade and the large volume of oil being transported through the Strait of Hormuz, "we will not attack Iran at any time before the US midterm elections on November 3rd."
Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi also stated that day that the Iran-US negotiations were ongoing, with all parties exchanging information through mediators. Iran proposed its own plan-"reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days"-and received a response from the US. Iran is currently reviewing these proposals and will respond within a few days.
Later on the 8th, the US Treasury Department announced a new round of sanctions against Iran, targeting 17 ships transporting Iranian crude oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals. US Treasury officials also stated that the US estimates approximately 20 million barrels of Iranian crude oil remain stranded on ships outside the area covered by the US port blockade. Officials indicated that due to the US blockade and sanctions, Iran has halted the loading and unloading of crude oil tankers.
US Military Prepares for Major Operational Resumption
Iran Says It Is Ready to Retaliate
The previous day, several US officials stated that the Pentagon had instructed US Central Command to complete preparations to deal with a possible resumption of large-scale military action against Iran. US and Israeli sources believe that if large-scale military action resumes, it is expected to involve massive bombing of Iranian energy facilities, infrastructure, and nuclear targets.
It is understood that Trump's national security team held a meeting at Camp David last week for several hours, during which the possibility of resuming large-scale military action against Iran was discussed.
On the 8th, the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Vahidi, stated that the IRGC will respond to any threats from the US and Israel with high vigilance, unified command, and full combat readiness.
He emphasized that the IRGC Navy maintains a high degree of coordination and joint operations with the Iranian Navy, possessing various precision-guided missiles, attack drones, high-speed ships, electronic warfare systems, and a robust coastal defense network, ready to deliver a decisive and devastating response to any enemy.
He also stated that no external force has the right to threaten, occupy, or interfere with the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy artery and a strategic red line for Iran; defending it is defending Iran's national interests, national security, and dignity.
