Polyester is a common term for polyester fiber, which is a synthetic fiber. The manufacturing process is divided into two parts: polyester melt synthesis and melt spinning.
Synthetic polyester: The raw materials for producing polyester are polyethylene terephthalate and ethylene glycol, which mainly come from petroleum, coal, and natural gas. Firstly, chemical substances such as toluene, xylene, and ethylene are obtained from petroleum, and then chemical reactions are carried out to obtain terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol. In the past, due to the difficulty in refining terephthalic acid, people used dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol to manufacture polyester. But since the successful refining of terephthalic acid in 1965, the production process of polyester has decreased and costs have decreased. The commonly used polyester is produced using terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol as raw materials. These raw materials form polyester melt through condensation reaction.
Spinning: Polyester melt can be used to prepare polyester fibers. Firstly, the polyester melt is dried and melted to reduce moisture content. Then, the dried polyester melt is heated to a high temperature, and through a spinning process, the melted polyester is extruded to form fine fibers. These filaments can be divided into polyester filament and polyester short fibers according to the processing method.
Polyester filament: Polyester filament is usually obtained through stretching, twisting, and other treatments. Stretch yarns (DT) and stretch textured yarns (DTY) are used for weaving fabrics. Fully stretched yarn (FDY) can be directly used for weaving fabrics. In addition, there is a type of polyester fiber called "Cordell", which is slightly lighter than polyester, with slightly lower strength and elongation, and is suitable for blending with cotton, wool, and other fabrics.
Polyester is a commonly used synthetic fiber with excellent properties, widely used in textiles and other fields. The above is the synthesis process and different types of preparation methods for polyester.
